Hearts Squared Blanket Free Pattern

Equipment Needed

Hook Size: 4mm/G-6 (if sizing up check yarn recommendations for hook size)

Yarn: Any DK weight I used:

Colour 1: Stylecraft Special DK in shade Cream x2 100g skein and Stylecraft Special DK in shade Stone in the pictures below between rounds 

Colour 2: Stylecraft Merry Go Round in shade Pastel Rainbow x2 100g skein l in the picture about and Merry Go Round in shade Dark Rainbow in the pattern pictures below between rounds

Pair of Scissors

Darning needle to sew in ends

Abbreviations

DC: double crochet

SC: single crochet

To start, in Colour 1, make a magic ring or CH3 and SLST into the 3rd chain from the hook to make a ring.

Round 1: CH3 (counts as 1st DC) 2DC in ring, CH 2, *3DC, CH2* repeat 2 more times, SLST to the 3rd chain of the beginning CH3. Turn and SLST into the corner space.


Round 2: CH3 (counts as 1st ST), DC in same corner space, *DC across the next 3 STs, (2DC, CH2, 2DC) in next corner space,* repeat twice, on last side DC across next 3 STs, then 2DC, CH2 in final corner space, SLST to the 3rd chain of the beginning CH3. Fasten off Colour 1. Turn.


Attach Colour 2 in any corner space

 

Round 3: CH3 (counts as 1st ST) DC in the same corner space, *skip 3 STs, (2DC, CH1, 2DC), skip 3 STs, (2DC, CH2, 2DC) in the next corner space* repeat twice, skip 3 STs, (2DC, CH1, 2DC), 2DC, CH2 in final corner space, SLST to 3rd chain of the beginning CH3 to join. Fasten off Colour 2. Do not turn.


Attach Colour 1 in any corner space 


Round 4: Note: the DC in this Row need to be slightly pulled up to stay in line with the sc in the row as they are being worked in the row below.

CH1, SC in corner, *SC in next 2 STs, DC in the 2nd ST visible in row 2, CH1, SC in the CH1 space from row 3, CH1, DC in the 2nd ST visible in row 2, SC in the next 2 STs, (SC, CH2, SC) in corner space* repeat twice more, SC in next 2 ST(s),  DC in 2nd visible ST from row 2, CH1 , SC in CH1 space, DC in the 2nd visible ST from row 2, SC in last 2 STs, SC in the beginning corner space, CH2 and SLST to the beginning SC. Turn and SLST into the corner.


Round 5: CH3 (counts as 1st ST) DC into the same corner space, *DC across each ST and chain space from previous row, (DC2, CH2, DC2) in corner* repeat twice more, DC across all ST and CH space on last side, 2DC, CH2 and SLST to the 3rd CH of the beginning CH3 to join. Fasten off, Turn.



Attach Colour 2 in any corner space

 

Round 6: CH3 (counts as 1st ST) DC in corner space, **skip 3 STs, (2DC, CH1, 2DC) in the next, skip 3 STs, (2DC, CH1, 2DC) in the next, skip 3 STs* repeat this step until you get to the corners, then (2DC, CH2, 2DC) in corner space,** repeat twice, *skip 3 ST(s) (2DC, CH1, 2DC)* repeat across until the last corner,  then 2DC, CH2 in final corner space and SLST to 3rd CH of the beginning CH3 to join. Fasten off Colour 2. Do not turn.



 Attach Colour 1 in any corner space


 Round 7: Note: the DC in this Row need to be slightly pulled up to stay in line with the sc in the row as they are being worked in the row below.

 SC in the corner space,** SC in the next 2 STs, *DC in the 2nd visible ST in row 2, CH1, SC in the CH1 space from row 3, CH1* repeat across until you reach the SC in the last heart cluster, CH1, DC in the 2nd visible ST in row 2, do not CH1, then SC in the last 2 STs and (SC, CH2, SC) in the corner space.** repeat twice, SC in the next 2 ST, *DC in the 2nd visible ST in row 2, CH1, SC in the CH1 space from row 3, CH1*  repeat across until you reach the last SC in the last heart cluster, CH1, DC in the 2nd visible ST from row 3, SC in the last 2 STs, SC, CH2 in the last corner space and SLST to the 1st sc of round to join. Do not fasten off. Turn.


Round 8: CH3 (counts as 1st ST) DC into the corner space, *DC across each ST and CH space from previous row, (DC2, CH2, DC2) in corner space* repeat twice more, DC across all ST and CH space on last side, 2DC, CH2 and SLST to the 3rd CH of the beginning CH3 sp to attach. Fasten off. Turn.


Round 9-*40 optional depending on required size*: Alternate rows 6, 7 and 8 until 40 rows are complete, or until blanket is desired size, then you are ready to alternate colours for the border. Your final Row should be a repeat of Row 7 before starting your border.


Border Round

Attach Colour 2 in any corner space

Border Round 1:  Repeat row 8

Attach Colour 1 in any corner space

Border Round 2:  Repeat row 6

Attach Colour 2 in any corner space

Border Round 3: Repeat row 7

Border Round 4: Repeat row 8

Border Round 5: SC in corner sp, CH1, (SC, CH1) across all ST on each side and (SC, CH1 ,SC) in each corner space. Fasten off and your blanket is complete.
